The State Swim Story
In 1976 Founder and former Australian National Swimming Coach, David Urry pioneered an inclusive, high-quality education model where water safety and technical skill is an achievable learning outcome – for everybody.
His philosophy was unique, bold and exciting for Australian families: This is your State Swim.
Water is part of the Australian-way and we believe it is your right to enjoy it. State Swim produces technically strong swimmers who are safe in, on and around water.
Our approach uses a system of “attained skill revision” – that is systematic skill development in combination with intuitive progression to keep swimmers challenged, motivated and excited about learning. You can see it in the pool today; David’s approach guides your learning experience and ensures you enjoy only the highest-quality outcomes in skill and competency.

1974
State Swim Founder David Urry is appointed as Australia’s Men’s Swimming Coach for the Commonwealth Games in Christchurch, New Zealand.
1976
David purchases Clovercrest Swimming School in Adelaide, South Australia where the State Swim philosophy, start-up structure and Programs are developed.
1980s
Clovercrest grows into one of Australia’s busiest Swimming Schools – the education Programs are highly regarded in the aquatic education industry.
1990s
The “State Swim” brand was born and expanded to multiple centres in Adelaide, Perth and Melbourne. In the 1990s, tens of thousands of children have learned to swim with State Swim.
2000s
A continuing expansion phase with new centres in Adelaide, Perth and Melbourne.
2010s
In 2018, State Swim opens its first international swim school in Singapore and continues to develop new Schools in Australia. The team continues to invest in continuous improvement of its Programs by implementing state of the art technology and team development.
Today and The Future

Teaching Exellence
We are proud to be able to say that State Swim has one of the most experienced workforces in the aquatic education industry. Our team members are all fully qualified to deliver lessons in the area in which they are working. We are affiliated with Active Training, a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) which specialises in delivering aquatic training to the Aquatic Education industry.
Our instructors all hold either the Active Training Swimming Instructor qualification or Austswim Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety qualification.

Forget term-based or week-to-week; we swim all year ‘round! So, all you have to do is book and start. The State Swim online booking system allows you to find and book the most convenient class for your swimmer (and family), view your schedule, track your swimmer’s progress and manage payment. All in one place! Life gets messy, so you can change your swim spot at any time. Unable to make your class? We make it easy for you to “just keep swimming” with Make-Up Vouchers.
Comfort and Convenience
We invest in quality, because you invest in us! State Swim facilities are either purpose-built or strategically customised to ensure the best possible learning experience under our care. Our pool water is of the highest quality and presentation; and many Schools are equipped with Ultra-Violet Light purification systems for fresher, cleaner water without the heavy smell of chlorine (great for asthmatics or swimmers with skin sensitivities.) The water is heated to 31 degrees Celsius for comfort – all year ‘round and sites include change room and shower amenities, as well as a Shop for bathers, goggles and other accessories. We also have plenty of on-site parking.
